The official opening of the exhibtion coincided with the closing of Friedrichstasse, a major commercial street (Galeries Lafayette), to all automobile traffic, for a duration of six months.
The width of the sidewalks on each side has been doubled and includes both café terrasses and spaces free of charge for gatherings, interspersed with new alignment trees.
Bicycle lanes in each direction have a speed limited to 20 km/h.
This pedestrianisation is seen as a first step towards the pedestrianisation of the whole Unter den Linden, the Berlin "Champs-Elysées".
